Louisvillians, be proud, and let the pickle races begin. Our town has the distinction of having the largest White Castle in the hamburger company’s 404-store, 11-state system, and you have the perhaps, maybe, sometime-in-the-future arena building project to thank for it.
Cheekiness aside, the place will be hoppin’.
According to a news release, the restaurant, located 105 East Market Street, in downtown, seats 78 people, about is 20 percent larger than the unit it replaced. White Castle built the site in anticipation of future foot traffic generated by the downtown arena.
To commemorate this auspicious occasion, Jerry “Mayor for Life” Abramson will actually step behind the counter and flip the squares for patrons first through the door.
According to White Castle, this is the third time a Porcelain Place has been built at the corner of First and Market. The first was in 1928, when the restaurant consisted of a counter, four stools and a few tables where customers bought “Slyders” for a nickel each. A redo was erected in 1976, followed by the addition of a drive-thru in 1987.
