Stephen had a lot of lamb … Last December, I was one of five writers assigned by Louisville Magazine to find and wax poetic about some the city’s best dishes as defined by cuisine. Mine was Mediterranean, the others were French, Italian, Asian, and South of the Border. That assignment led me to discover some incredible restaurants I’d not visited, including Al Watan, Sahara Café and Saffron’s Persian Cuisine. If you’ve not checked these off your list, you’re truly missing out.

Here’s the link to the story where you can read my thoughts and those of my well-fed colleagues. Since the browser becomes as e-mag, skip to the story by typing 33 into the page number bar to scoot to the goods.

Mini-rant on muddy Mexican marketing: Got a flyer in the mail this week announcing a pizza rollout at Salarita’s Fresh Cantina. Pizza at a Mexican joint? I suppose it could happen … if real dough was used, and not a tortilla! You almost expect a movie-like disclaimer: “No Italian ingredients were harmed in the manufacture of this ersatz pizza.”

I don’t care if you put red sauce, mozzarella and basil on a tortilla, it’s a tostada, not pizza. There’s no crispy-chewy hand-formed dough, no baking in a stone-hearth or conveyor oven. It’s a tortilla mounded with traditional Mexican ingredients and baked: a tostada.

Morton’s $99 Valentine’s dinner—for “any budget”? I’ll extend the marketing rant to this offer by Morton’s The Steakhouse, which promises its Valentine’s Seafood and Classic Combinations intro’d this month are priced “perfect for any budget” … as long as that budget includes a $99 meal for two (tax, gratuity and alcohol not included).

Mmm-kay.

No knocks against Morton’s; great place deserving of its pro-steak praise, and V-day’s often about special-occasion, max-the-credit-card dining. It’s just out of my budget and likely many others’ as well, so it struck me as kinda funny. Still, if you’ve got some mad skrilla stashed away for a fab Valentine’s feast, click here for more info.
