Celebrate Healthy Living: This Saturday, May 30, the healthy-living businesses in Westport Village are hosting Healthy You Healthy Planet, a festival featuring speakers, health screenings, chair massages, healthy food, and live music, all to promote the adoption of healthier lifestyles. This event also kicks off the start of the Westport Village Farmer’s Market.[Westport Village]

Reviews: In the LEO this week, Kevin Gibson reviewed Browning’s while Robin Garr dined at the new Zaytún Mediterranean Grill and sampled the free Barbeque Pulled Pork Slider from White Castle. [LEO] Marty Rosen reviewed Coach Lamp in the C-J.

If You Can Cook Seafood: Jefferson Community and Technical College is hosting the fourth annual Seafood Cooking Contest on June 8. To compete, chefs must submit two recipes that use Kentucky farm-raised seafood to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture by June 1. [Biz First]

Other Food from the Water News: On Saturdays from May 30 through the end of crawfish season, Selena’s at Willow Lake Tavern will be boiling Live Louisiana Crawfish, serving buckets of beer, and holding corn hole tournaments. [HotBytes]

Specials: Bistro 301 is celebrating its 3rd anniversary by offering small plates of food and a daily wine glass and cocktail feature for $3.01 each starting June 15. [HotBytes]

Choose Your Pajamas Wisely: Proof on Main is throwing its fourth annual Pajama Party on June 12. This event features a cocktails and hors d’ouevre reception benefiting the International Contemporary Art Foundation. [C-J]

Beer Is the New Water: More than 30 breweries and wineries are participating in this year’s Feast of Ale festival happening on June 6 at St. Anthony of Padua Church. I can’t help but find the location of this event deliciously ironic. [C-J]

The Louisville Downtown Management District has come up with a way for Derby City diners to get the most for their culinary buck.

by Jessica Elliott

The Healthy Trend: Business First reported last week that Pizza Hut has developed an organic pizza they’re calling “The Natural.” In similar news, Dunkin’ Donuts will begin offering healthier food choices starting this month, such as flatbread sandwiches, multigrain bagels, and low-fat muffins. I’m not sure what kind of market research they used to make this decision, but when I want to eat healthy, Pizza Hut and Dunkin’ Donuts are the last two restaurants that come to mind.

The Cheap Trend: Marty Rosen reviewed Bistro 301 in the C-J this weekend, noting the restaurant’s reasonable prices. Results of a recent Gallup poll show that more people are choosing beer over wine these days. I can’t help but wonder if this is truly a study in preference or simply a result of people cutting back on extrinsic expenses as a result of the poor economy.

Ate Up With Eating Locally: The recent push to eat locally hasn’t gone unnoticed by local media: both LEO and the C-J published features praising locally-grown tomatoes last week. LEO also announced that it is going to start a monthly column with a focus on eating locally.

Eat Like a Kid Again: Chef Dean Corbett of Jack’s Lounge has developed several new menu items, such as Macaroni with Aged Cheddar and Meat Loaf Sliders, that combine adult ingredients with favorite childhood meals and snacks. In addition to its Dining Guide, Velocity published a piece in its regular edition last week in which chefs from local restaurants created summer recipes based on childhood favorites.

Take a Dive Off the Diet Train: If a healthy pizza night sounds like the worst thing in the world, you may want to try the newest addition to the Papa John’s menu, an order of pastries filled with chocolate and sprinkled with icing. According to Darla Carter of the C-J, it may actually be better for you than some coffee drinks. In her feature, “Order with Care,” she explains that some coffee drinks can have more calories and fat than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder.

In her weekly column, Velocity writer Javacia Harris claims Turkey Joe’s puts out some darn good bar food all should try. Looks like the beer selection is decent, too. Co-owner Chuck Starcher opened the restaurant in January in the spot formerly housing Wings N Things at 2809 N. Hurstbourne Parkway. Turkey Joe’s name doesn’t exactly inspire me to rush over there, but repeated good comments about the place have me intrigued.

Bistro 301 unveils new menu: Bistro 301 (301 W. Market, formerly Deke’s Marketplace Grill) wants to break the wintertime blahs (only seven days of sunshine this month, folks) for locals with its new menu. On the well-rounded list are some new soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes. The grilled chicken breast with a pomegranate and molasses glazed ($8.95) looks tasty, as does the ancho-chili-rubbed filet with a Cuban espresso sauce ($29.95). Call 584-8337 for more info.
